Super group Super Junior says it’s here to stay

Marriage and military service loom, but won’t break up the band

Super Junior, the Korean super group founded in 2005, had some major changes to its lineup last year, but its fifth anniversary year looks like it will be another successful one for the group, which is one of the largest boy bands in the world.

Last month, when Super Junior released its fourth full-length album, it sold 100,000 copies in the first week after its release on April 13. Industry experts expect the album, titled “Bonamana,” will surpass the group’s previous sales record, achieved with its third album “Sorry Sorry.” That album sold 250,000 copies and topped the album sales chart when it was released in March last year.

At a time when other groups such as Girls’ Generation are eschewing the regular full-length CD format in favor of mini albums, digital albums and other kinds of special albums, that’s quite a feat.
Despite their success, the up-and-coming idol group has struggled this year. Three of the band’s members – Han Geng, Kang-in and Kibum – left the group during the recording period. In the coming year, the band is facing new challenges, with marriage and military service looming on the horizon.

In a recent interview with 10 of the band’s 13 members, however, the boys seemed committed to staying together for years to come, no matter what life may throw their way.

Here are some excerpts from the interview.

Q. What has made you such a strong group over the past five years?

A. Heechul: We really talk a lot. If there are problems, we talk until they are resolved. Lack of communication always creates problems.

It must have been difficult for you to make the new album without the three other members of the band.

Sungmin: We felt pressure taking their places, but it has also given us an opportunity to think about how important each member of the band is.

What do the three other members think about the new song “Bonamana”?

Leeteuk: Kang-in said the group’s dance moves are awesome and Kibum said he was sorry that I have to fill the space he left.

The choreography for the song is pretty impressive.

Eunhyuk: The dance moves were created by American choreographer Nick Bass, who was inspired by figure skating and short track skating.

Many people have said the title song for the current album is very similar to the group’s previous hit song “Sorry Sorry.”

Leeteuk: Maybe that’s because the new song is so characteristic of what we do and that’s what makes people think that Sorry Sorry and the new song are alike.

I think that criticism like that is better than nothing because it shows that Bonamana has made an impression on the public.

Heechul: For me, the criticism is flattering because it is a sign that we’ve found our signature sound. In fact, Leeteuk and I didn’t like the idea of [Bonamana] as the title song because we didn’t think the electronic sound represented us.

But after recording it and practicing the dance moves, I’ve changed my mind. I think the song suits us.

Shindong proposed to his girlfriend [in a numerical code] in the liner notes and his actions have since become the talk of the town. What’s happening with that?

Shindong: I was thinking about decoding it for the public after the album was released but my fans have already decoded it.

I haven’t heard from my girlfriend since I popped the question, but if she says yes, I want to get married as soon as possible.

Do you think you will still perform as Super Junior even if some of you get married?

Heechul: It’s our goal to keep singing and dancing as Super Junior when we are 30 and 40, even after marriage and our military service.

Do you have any secrets for keeping fit?

Yesung: Siwon always inspires us. Now we’re in a kind of competition [to build muscles.]

SuJu Yesung & Sungmin’s Interview At Musical Hong Gildong’s Press Conference !

Q : Sungmin & Yesung have debuted in 2009 with the musicals “Namhan sansung” & “Akilla”, now both of you will be in the musical for the second time with “Hong Gildong”, how are your feelings ?

Yesung : Last time “Namhan sansung” was a historical musical, too. And because of it so I feel less nervous this time with “Hong Gildong”. And because I have many same things with Hong Gildong so there isnt really difficulty in practicing. Although my acting still lacks something but I will try my best to show everybody what I couldnt show last time. Especially because there are many action scenes so I’m in the middle of learning how to use stick as weapon and fencing.

Sungmin : Actually the only word/line in “Akilla” is Akilla so the acting is both difficult and easy at the same time. But the lines in “Hong Gildong” is much more different in compared with “Akilla” so I think it’s more difficult to me than Yesung hyung. And there will be many splendid action scenes in this work.

Q : In the future you will continue participating in musicals so do you have any work that you want to try individually ?

Yesung : Personally, I have many work that I want to try. It was pity that I had to practice for “Namhan sansung” so I missed “Notre Dame de Paris”. But the musical that I want to try most is “Mozart!”, it’s pity I couldnt participate because of the year-end music award ceremony. In the future if there are chances, I want to do not only historical musical but also challenging myself in license works.
Sungmin : I still have a lot of thing to learn so I should take “Hong Gildong” as a chance for me to improve my ability. If there are chances I want to do some good works. I want a lot of things but I also lack a lot of things.

[NEWS] Leeteuk, There Is A “Special” Reason Why He Is Receiving Attention As The Next Generation MC !

Super Junior’s Leeteuk is gaining popularity as a new generation MC following after Kang Ho Dong and Yoo Jae Seok. ▶ Talents, Is not having a character actually an advantage?

Leeteuk doesn’t have a special talent or character. He doesn’t have an outstanding appearance and he’s not a person who has a strong charisma either. He has a disadvantage at standing out on variety shows. His rank in popularity in Super Junior is in the high-middle. But this point is a main plus factor in becoming successful as an MC.

“Rather than being a model, I’ve accepted the role of helping the people around me stand out. As much as not having exceptional point, I decided ‘ ‘Let’s stay consistent’. I think that that role of being oil for the gear wheel fits well as one of the roles of the MC. As I gain acceptance as a helper figure in the program, I can slowly expand my position.”

Leeteuk’s good point is that on stage, he is demonstrating charisma but on variety shows, without hesitation, he ruins himself.

“Just because you say I am an idol, should I carry myself fabulously and be only amazing?. I think the lifespan of an idol is 5 years. If you want to look at it for the long run, you must have a very flexible stance. It’s good to become instantly amazing but I think receiving love for a long time is more important.”

▶ My two teachers are Kang Hodong and Boom

Leeteuk counts on Kang Hodong and Boom to be important teachers to him. Kang Hodong taught him the ‘Authenticity of Variety’. From Boom, he learned how to slowly sacrifice himself and how to hold a shining presence along with the other stars.

“Just looking at Kang Hodong sunbaenim, I feel there is a lot of learn. Sometimes he calls me to his waiting room and says ‘Just sit down here next to me ‘. I learn about the ‘Authenticity of Variety’ by studying him constantly and watch him holding discussions. One day he gave me the advice ‘If you want to succed as an MC, you need 10 years of experience. Don’t be impatient and build up steadily step by step.”

Leeteuk’s ‘Teukkie Gayo ‘ was included in the section he did together with Boom called ‘Boom Academy’. But when Boom left to serve in the army, Leeteuk worked to familiarize himself and is demonstrating his skills.

“Over the past 3 years, I did 6 programs together with Boom hyung. He’s a hyung that helped me a lot. Even though he is serving in the army currently, he contacts me and gives me support and advice. I want to take good care of this position until Boom hyung is discharged from the army. At that time, we will be more successful then now.”

▶ Exhaustive Self Management

There is not a break in Leeteuk’s schedule. Every night at 10PM, he hosts KBS 2FM ‘Kiss the Radio’, and is a regular guest on ‘Kang Shim Jang ‘ and ‘’Star King’. He is also absorbed in preparing for the release of Super Junior’s 4th album in May. He is also conducting Super Junior’s Asia Tour every weekend. Far from rest time, he is even lacking time to sleep. But Leeteuk doesn’t forget to research up items for ‘Teukkie Gayo’ and get in exercise.

“The item is the life of “‘Teukkie Gayo ‘. Everyday after my radio schedule, I return to the dorms and hold an idea conference with Eunhyuk and Shindong. We find out interesting things about the guests and we find the funny pictures ourselves. As we discuss over the phone with the writer noonas, we even work out the script. We better the item we find, the better the response will be so as it goes on, my shoulders get heavier. “
No matter how late work ends, I go to the health club and build up my physical strength. 2AM is my regular workout time. I do weight training for 1~2 hours and do aerobic exercises.”

“Trainer Lee Youngman never sleeps and waits for me to help me out. I’m thankful and sorry at the same time.”

▶ Super Junior is my everything

Leeteuk has a unique attachment to Super Junior. Although he is taking an active role as an MC, he puts being a Super Junior member before everything else. In 2009, he was feeling very great when their 3rd album ‘Sorry Sorry’ became a huge hit but he was heartbroken due to the unfavorable conditions that some of his members were in. That is because of his responsibility as the leader.

“2009 was a very meaningful year for Super Junior. But Hankyung’s leaving us and Kangin’s accident was a very painful ordeal for us. When Kangin caused trouble the first time, I cheered him up saying ‘It’s okay’ but the second time around, I reprimanded him. It’s because of how disappointed I was. But Kangin is still a very important member. And whenever Hankyung comes back, we will accept him warmly.”

Recently, Leeteuk is happy with Super Junior’s latest Asia Tour. It’s due to the positive response from the overseas fans.
“At the Taiwan concert, when local stars followed us in the ‘Sorry Sorry’ dance, I was extremely happy. I am gaining the confidence to begin our overseas promotions. But it is unfortunate that some members are missing. When all 13 members are together is when we are truly Super Junior.”

Most of us have heard of the tragic earthquake in Haiti that cost many lives. Many countries have organised relief funds to help the people in Haiti. Danbi is a variety show in which celebrities participates to do charity work. It was quite obvious that the Danbi Team would visit Haiti, this time, bringing along Super Junior's DongHae.

The Danbi crew wishes for everyone to see that Haiti is still in desperate need of help. DongHae had stated in his cyworld that the country is still in a bad condition and prays for everyone safety. The episode date is stil tentative.
